The San Diego Police Department warned residents that it will be conducting a DUI and license checkpoint somewhere in the city on Friday night.
The checkpoint will be operating from 11 p.m. Friday to 3 a.m. Saturday at a location chosen because of previous accidents and arrests. Officers will be stopping drivers briefly to check for alcohol or drug impairment and proper licensing.
The department regularly announces the checkpoints in advance because of the deterrent effect on people who might drink and drive.
Over the past three years, San Diego officers have investigated 2,005 DUI collisions which have claimed 42 lives and resulted in thousands of injuries.
