A pedestrian was killed Tuesday morning when she ran into the path of a commuter train near Swami’s Beach, authorities said.
The rail fatality near the intersection of Santa Fe Drive and Vulcan Avenue in Encinitas occurred shortly before 6:30 a.m., according to San Diego Sheriff’s Department officials.
The southbound Coaster was traveling at about 50 mph when the 56-year old woman got onto the tracks in front of it, too close for the operator to be able to stop the train and keep it from hitting her. She died at the scene, Deputy Tamani Pugh said.
The woman’s name was withheld pending family notification.
