San Diego Police are planning a DUI and driver’s license checkpoint at an undisclosed location within the city limits on Thursday night.
The checkpoint will be in operation from 11 p.m. Thursday to 3 a.m. Friday at a location chosen because of previous DUI accidents and arrests.
The department regularly announces the checkpoints in advance because of the deterrent effect on people who may drink or take drugs and drive.
“Research shows that crashes involving an impaired driver can be reduced by up to 20 percent when well-publicized DUI checkpoints and proactive DUI patrols are conducted routinely,” according to the department.
Over the past three years San Diego officers have investigated 2005 DUI collisions which have claimed 42 lives and resulted in thousands of injuries.
