DUI checkpoints are usually set up on weekends, but the San Diego Police Department is planning one for Monday night.

The checkpoint will be set up at an undisclosed location within the city limits between 11 p.m. Monday and 3 a.m. Tuesday.

Drivers will be checked for signs of alcohol or drug impairment as well as proper licensing.

The department usually announces the checkpoints in advance because of the deterrent effect on drunk driving.

Over the course of the past three years San Diego officers have investigated 2,005 DUI collisions which have claimed 42 lives and resulted in thousands of injuries.

Funding for this checkpoint was by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety.
