Firefighters extinguished a car fire at a gas station in Carmel Mountain Ranch Friday, a dispatcher said.
It happened on the 11000 block of Rancho Carmel Drive. At around 1:40 p.m., an elderly man accidentally hit his gas pedal instead of the brakes, speeding into a gas pump and an SUV. This sparked a fire on the vehicles.
A woman was pumping gas into her SUV at the time and was able to dodge the crash. A Good Samaritan ran over to the scene and pulled the elderly man out of his vehicle before he was injured in the fire.
Station employees were able to shut off the gas before the flames could spread wildly out of control. San Diego Fire-Rescue crews arrived at the scene and quickly extinguished the flames.
There were no reports of injuries. HazMat was requested and San Diego police investigated the crash.
