The San Diego Police Department plans to set up a DUI checkpoint somewhere within the city limits on Friday night.

Police will be stopping and checking drivers for signs of alcohol or drug impairment and proper licensing between 11 p.m. Friday and 3 a.m. Saturday.

The location was not announced, but police said it will be chosen based on previous accidents and arrests.

The department regularly announces the checkpoints in advance, noting “the deterrent effect of DUI checkpoints is a proven resource in reducing the number of persons killed and injured in alcohol or drug involved crashes.”

Over the past three years, San Diego officers have investigated 2,005 DUI collisions which have claimed 42 lives and resulted in thousands of injuries.

Funding for the checkpoint was provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
