At least three teenagers were injured Monday afternoon when the truck they were in crashed off an East County road as they were fleeing from deputies responding to a fight in an East County commercial district.

The brawl, which involved about 10 boys, was reported in the 7900 block of Broadway in Lemon Grove about 1 p.m., according to sheriff’s officials.

Prior to the arrival of patrol personnel, the combatants fled, seven of them in the same truck. When deputies caught up to the vehicle in the area of Dayton and Skyline drives a short time later, the driver refused to yield and sped off, running a red light in the process, Lt. Jason Vickery said.

Within moments, the teen behind the wheel of the pickup lost control of it, sending the vehicle careening off the street and into a palm tree alongside Alton Drive. Three of the occupants then jumped out and ran off, and the others were detained by the deputies.

At least three of the boys were taken Rady Children’s Hospital in San Diego for treatment of injuries of undisclosed severity, said Sonny Saghera, spokesman for Heartland Fire & Rescue.
