Border Patrol agents patrolling Interstate 5 in the San Clemente area stopped a tiny Mercedes Smart car carrying 75 bundles of methamphetamine, the agency reported Friday.
The vehicle driven by a 25-year-old U.S. citizen was stopped at 8:45 p.m. Wednesday night about three miles north of the San Clemente checkpoint.
A trained Border Patrol dog alerted agents to the presence of drugs, and 75 bundles of methamphetamine worth $257,000 were found in the cargo area.
The driver and a 60-year-old female passenger were arrested on charges of narcotics smuggling and turned over the the Drug Enforcement Administration.
