The San Diego Police Department announced officers will set up a DUI and driver’s license checkpoint somewhere within the city limits on Wednesday night.
The checkpoint will be chosen based on accident and DUI arrest records and will operate from 11 p.m. Wednesday until 3 a.m. Thursday, police said.
Checkpoints are routinely announced in advance because this has a deterrent effect on people who might drive under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
Specially trained officers will be looking for signs or alcohol or drug impairment and checking licensing. Motorists will be delayed only momentarily.
Over the past three years San Diego officers have investigated 2005 DUI collisions that have claimed 42 lives and resulted in thousands of injuries.
Funding for the latest checkpoint is provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
