A suspect in a Pauma Valley homicide turned himself in to authorities Thursday.

Omar Placencia of Valley Center arrived at Vista Detention Facility along with an attorney late Thursday afternoon and surrendered in connection with the death of 31-year-old Raymond Esparza, according to sheriff’s officials.

Placencia, 20, allegedly opened fire on Esparza for unknown reasons in front of a taco shop in the 17100 block of state Route 76 shortly after 9:30 p.m. Friday.

Deputies and paramedics found the mortally wounded Pauma Valley resident lying in a parking lot at the business, Lt. Kenneth Nelson said. The victim died at the scene.

Officials have disclosed no suspected motive for the slaying. It was unclear if Esparza and Placencia knew each other.

Placencia was booked on suspicion of murder and was being held without bail pending arraignment, scheduled for Monday afternoon.
