A suspected drunken driver ran a red light at a Carlsbad intersection and caused a chain-reaction crash that left him and two other motorists injured.

The 46-year-old suspect was behind the wheel of an eastbound BMW SUV that blew through the traffic signal on Poinsettia Lane at Aviara Parkway and first struck a northbound Toyota shortly after 5:30 p.m. Sunday.

The BMW then hit a GMC truck that was stopped in the westbound lane and the Toyota struck an Audi that was also stopped at the red light, according to Carlsbad Police.

The BMW’s driver was taken to a hospital, as were the Toyota’s driver and passenger, police said in a statement.

Police said the BMW’s driver was being investigated for driving under the influence.
