A minor car crash in a shopping center parking lot outside El Cajon Friday led to a stabbing that left a man hospitalized and his assailant on the run.

A parked Saturn sedan was hit by a black pickup truck near the McDonald’s restaurant in the 13000 block of Camino Canada around 6 a.m. As the truck’s driver was speaking with the Saturn’s owner, one of two passengers in the pickup got out and got into an argument with one of the sedan’s two other occupants, San Diego Sheriff’s Sgt. Kristin Brayman said.

The argument soon escalated.

The truck’s passenger pulled a knife and held it up to the other man’s stomach, but did not cut him, Brayman said. The sedan’s other passenger got out and was chased around by the knife-wielding man, then was stabbed in the neck, according to the sergeant.

The suspect got back into the truck and was driven away, Brayman said.

The victim, whose name was not released, was taken to a hospital to be treated for non-life-threatening injuries.
