A man was hit by a fast-moving Amtrak train Sunday evening in Carlsbad but is expected to survive, according to the San Diego Sheriff’s Department.

The crash, involving a northbound Pacific Surfliner train, took place about 8:15 p.m. near the Carlsbad Village Station on State Street.

The train was traveling at 87 miles per hour when it struck the man standing near the tracks.

The unidentified victim was transported to Scripps La Jolla Hospital where he is being treated for his injuries.

It was not clear why the man was in the train’s path. Anyone with information about the accident was encouraged to call the sheriff’s non-emergency line at (858) 565-5200.
