One person died and seven were wounded Sunday in a mass shooting in the UTC area that ended when San Diego Police officers shot and killed the suspect.
The shooter was identified as Peter Selis, 49, a resident of the complex, according to Police Chief Shelley Zimmerman. Selis was described as a white man wearing brown shorts, who was reportedly drinking a beer during the gunfire and took time out to reload his gun.
Zimmerman told reporters that Selis was spotted by a police helicopter, which directed officers arriving on the scene.
The suspect pointed his gun at three officers as they arrived and was immediately shot dead, she said.
Zimmerman said there was no immediate information about a possible motive and that the investigation was in the very early stages.
She did not provide details of the injuries, but said several of the victims were in critical condition. One of the victims, a woman, later died at a hospital.
Emergency vehicles swarmed around the apartment complex located at 9000 block of Judicial Drive between Westfield UTC mall and Interstate 805.
The shooting began shortly after 6 p.m. in the pool area of the complex. The shooting was over by 6:43 p.m., according to police.
“This was a truly horrific and disturbing act,” said San Diego Mayor Kevin Faulconer. “We pray for the victims and thank our first responders. Our city rejects this senseless violence.”
