A Coaster train struck and killed a female pedestrian in Carlsbad Monday afternoon, the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department reported.
The fatal collision was reported at approximately 1:47 p.m. on the railroad tracks just north of Tamarack Avenue.
It was the fourth accident involving a train and pedestrian in San Diego County in a week.
According to Deputy Brian Abraham, the northbound Coaster train was traveling approximately 90 mph when the locomotive’s operator saw a female pedestrian “standing on the tracks.”
The operator used the train’s emergency braking but was unable to stop in time to avoid impact, Abraham reported.
The pedestrian was pronounced dead at the scene. It’s unclear why she was on the tracks. At press time, her identity has not been released by authorities.
Rail service through the area was suspended for about 45 minutes due to the fatality, officials said.
Anyone with information about the incident is asked to contact the sheriff’s department’s non-emergency line at (858) 565-5200.
