An apparently suicidal man climbed onto a freeway bridge in Mission Valley on Thursday afternoon, forcing closure of southbound Interstate 5 that continued into the Friday morning commute.

The California Highway Patrol initially closed westbound Interstate 8 at I-5 and southbound I-5 at I-8. A SigAlert was issued at 2:26 p.m. Thursday.

Westbound I-8 was later reopened but southbound I-5 and the transition road from northbound I-5 to westbound Interstate-8 remained closed at 8:11 a.m. Friday.

Southbound traffic was being diverted to eastbound I-8 and then other freeways heading south. Because many government offices are closed for Cesar Chavez Day, the only major traffic backup was on Route 163 south through Balboa Park.

Officers are trying to persuade the apparently suicidal man to get down from the freeway structure.

Times of San Diego will continue to update this article as more news becomes available.
