A 23-year-old man was found dead under suspicious circumstances Friday near Gompers Preparatory Academy in the Chollas View neighborhood.
A school employee raising the flag in front of the campus on 47th Street near Hilltop Drive around 5:45 a.m. spotted the body. The victim was later identified as Cherkeiray Jones of San Diego.
Jones had suffered at least one gunshot wound to his upper body, according to San Diego police. The school was closed at the time. Homicide detectives were subsequently summoned to investigate, authorities said.
Hilltop Drive was closed between 47th and 48th streets while the investigation was underway. No students were at the charter secondary school in the 1000 block of 47th Street at the time of the discovery.
