The San Diego Police Department said it will set up a DUI checkpoint on Saturday night at an undisclosed location within the city limits.

The checkpoint will take place from 11 p.m. Saturday to 3 a.m. Sunday, with police stopping motorists briefly to check for alcohol or drugs and to ensure proper licensing.

The department regularly announces the checkpoints in advance because of the deterrent effect. Locations are chosen based on collision statistics and the frequency of DUI arrests.

Drivers caught driving impaired can expect the impact of a DUI arrest to include jail time, fines, fees, DUI classes, other expenses that can exceed $10,000.

Funding for the checkpoint is provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
