The San Diego Police Department plans to set up a DUI and driver’s license checkpoint at an undisclosed location on Saturday night.

The checkpoint will operate somewhere within the city limits between 11 p.m. Saturday and 3 a.m. Sunday.

The department routinely announces checkpoints in advance because this has a deterrent effect in reducing crashes involving alcohol or drugs.

Officers will be delaying motorists only momentarily while looking for signs of alcohol or drug impairment and checking for proper licensing.

Nationally 10,000 are killed annually by impaired drivers.

Drivers caught driving impaired can expect the impact of a DUI arrest to include jail time, fines, fees, DUI classes and other expenses that can exceed $10,000.
