A pedestrian from New York suffered severe injuries Tuesday when a car hit her on a coast road near South Carlsbad State Beach.

The southbound 2002 Ford Mustang convertible struck the 51-year-old woman in the 6500 block of Carlsbad Boulevard shortly before 10:30 a.m. Medics took her to Scripps Memorial Hospital La Jolla for treatment of life- threatening injuries, Carlsbad police Cpl. Mike Bolton said.

It was unclear who was at fault for the crash, which forced a several- hour closure of the street at Palomar Airport Road.

“Investigators are working to determine where (on the roadway) the pedestrian was walking at the time of the collision,” Bolton said.
