Three people have died on San Diego County freeways this Christmas holiday weekend and 41 motorists have been arrested on suspicion of drunk driving, according to figures released Monday by the California Highway Patrol.
The traffic statistics were collected from 6 p.m. Friday until 6 a.m. Monday and take into account all freeways in the county and surface streets in unincorporated areas patrolled by the CHP. The fatality figures include all law enforcement agencies that patrol the streets in the county, according to CHP Officer Thomas Doerr.
There were 20 traffic fatalities statewide during the same period and 535 drunk driving arrests, Doerr said. Ten of the fatalities involved the driver or passenger not wearing a seat belt.
