A man who had been shot in the head crashed a car into a house in Escondido early Wednesday morning.

Gunshots were heard in the vicinity of 15th Avenue and South Maple Street around 12:30 a.m., but none of the 911 callers saw what had happened, Escondido Police Sgt. Shannon Martin said.

Officers en route to investigate were told shortly afterward that a car had crashed into a house at the corner of 15th Avenue and South Maple Street. They arrived to find the driver suffering from a gunshot wound to his head, Martin said.

The wounded man was taken to a hospital, Martin said. An update on his condition was not immediately available.

No one in the home was injured, Martin said.
