In continuing effort to fight drunk and drugged driving, the San Diego Police Department is planning a DUI checkpoint at an undisclosed location on Saturday night.

The checkpoint will operate between 11 p.m. Saturday and 3 a.m. Sunday at a location based on past collision and arrest statistics

Checkpoints are routinely announced in advanced because research shows that crashes involving an impaired driver can be reduced by up to 20 percent through advance warning.

Nationally over 10,000 people are killed annually by a drunk or drugged driver.

Over the past three years, San Diego Police officers have investigated 2,381 DUI collisions which have claimed 19 lives and resulted in another 2,257 injuries.
