John Wiederkeher, 27, is suspected of holding up a U.S. Bank branch inside the Albertsons grocery store located in the 2900 block of Alpine Blvd., according to a San Diego County Sheriff’s Department report.
The robbery took place shortly after 11 a.m. Wednesday when sheriff’s deputies were called to the bank following reports of a white male, wearing a blue jacket and black baseball cap, who handed a demand note to a teller and then made off with an undisclosed amount of cash, the report stated.
The FBI and sheriff’s detectives quickly identified Wiederkeher as the suspect, but were unable to locate him Wednesday.
The search continued and by Thursday authorities tracked Wiederkeher — who is alleged to have a long criminal history — to an area near Browns Road and Willows Road, about a half mile from Viejas Casino.
When deputies closed in, Wiederkeher ran, reached into his pocket, pulled out a large knife, and began stabbing himself in the chest, the report continued.
Deputies used a Taser on Wiederkerher, which caused him to drop the knife while authorities moved in.
“Wiederkeher’s self-inflicted stab wounds were so severe that he was airlifted to a local hospital for treatment of his injuries,” the report said.
The injured suspect has been placed under arrest and will be booked after his hospital release.
