One bicyclist was gravely injured Wednesday and another less seriously hurt in a collision on a Clairemont Mesa thoroughfare, authorities reported.

The riders were heading east in the 4300 block of Balboa Avenue when one of them crashed into the other from behind and both tumbled to the ground shortly before 2 p.m., according to San Diego police.

One suffered severe skull fractures and was not expected to survive, Officer Tony Martinez said. The other, an 18-year-old man, was left with cuts to his back and feet. Medics took both to Scripps Memorial Hospital La Jolla.

The critically injured bicyclist remained unidentified as of late afternoon, Martinez said.
