The name of a Chula Vista man whose body was found four days after a vehicle crash on a freeway bridge over the Sweetwater Channel was released Saturday by the Medical Examiner’s Office.

Antonio Javier Romero III, 26, was found floating in the South Bay waterway on Friday by a person fishing near the connector between westbound state Route 54 and southbound Interstate 5, according to Chula Vista police.

Law enforcement dive-team members recovered Romero’s body from the water and investigators were able to identify Romero via evidence at the scene, Lt. Fritz Reber said, declining to elaborate. The crash on the elevated roadway near Sweetwater Marsh National Wildlife Refuge occurred about 1:30 a.m. Monday, according to police.

When California Highway Patrol officers and emergency crews arrived to aid the two involved motorists, one of them was nowhere to be found. Romero’s family subsequently filed a missing-person report, Reber said.
