The California Highway Patrol is investigating a fiery wrong way crash that killed one person and closed all lanes on northbound Interstate 5 in Pacific Beach on Friday night.
The crash was reported at 10:04 p.m., approaching the Balboa Avenue exit.
The wrong way vehicle burst into flames after colliding with another car. A person at the scene tried to put out the blaze with a fire extinguisher before firefighters arrived.
The driver of the second vehicle suffered major injuries and was taken to a hospital.
Northbound traffic was detoured off the freeway onto Mission Bay Drive, through the signals at Balboa Avenue and then back onto the interstate.
