A U.S. Postal Service employee who worked in Oceanside pleaded guilty Thursday in Los Angeles to a federal charge of possessing at least $21,000 in checks stolen from the mail.
Tamika Deloach, 38, of Wilmington faces up to five years in federal prison when she is sentenced in Los Angeles by U.S. District Judge John Walter on the stolen mail count, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office. The sentencing date was not immediately available.
Between Feb. 1 and May 24, Deloach took at least 17 checks totaling over $21,000 from her former job as a mail carrier assigned to the Brooks Street Post Office in Oceanside, according to court papers.
She deposited the checks into her Navy Federal Credit Union account, according to the government.
Deloach was among 33 defendants across Southern California charged in August as part of a sweep targeting criminal activity linked to USPS employees. Most of the defendants stole mail, embezzled from the agency or, in one case, failed to deliver nearly 50,000 pieces of mail.
