Federal authorities Thursday investigated the discovery of a cross-border tunnel between Tijuana and Otay Mesa.

Officials declined to immediately release specific information about the underground passageway, including its exact location, dimensions and suspected or known purpose.

“The San Diego Tunnel Task Force is confirming the discovery of a cross-border tunnel in the San Diego/Tijuana border area,” said Lauren Mack, a spokeswoman for U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

“In order to ensure the integrity of the ongoing investigation and the safety of those involved, (Homeland Security Investigations) San Diego is not providing further details at this time,” she said.

Officials will reveal more information about the discovery “as soon as it is appropriate to do so,” Mack said.
