A solo car crash on Interstate 15 near Kit Carson Park left a man and woman hospitalized Wednesday and the latter under arrest on suspicion of drunken driving.

The wreck occurred shortly after 2:30 a.m., when 21-year-old Caley M. Coyne of Vista lost control of her northbound 2005 Saab just north of Via Rancho Parkway in Escondido, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The vehicle veered off the east side of the freeway, smashed through a chain-link fence, struck two eucalyptus trees and came to rest on its roof in a parking lot next to a restaurant at the Westfield North County mall, said CHP public-affairs Officer Jim Bettencourt.

Firefighters had to free Coyne’s 25-year-old passenger from the crumpled car. Medics took him to Palomar Medical Center along with Coyne for treatment of major and moderately serious trauma, respectively.

Upon her release from the hospital, Coyne will be booked on suspicion of felony DUI, Bettencourt said.
