A man walking in traffic on Interstate 8 in the Bostonia area was fatally struck by a vehicle, authorities said Monday.

The driver of the vehicle was unable to avoid the pedestrian on the eastbound freeway approaching Greenfield Drive and crashed into him shortly before midnight. The gravely injured pedestrian was taken to a hospital, where he later died, according to California Highway Patrol Officer Kevin Pearlstein.

Pearlstein said investigators were working to determine who the man was and whether he was under the influence of drugs or alcohol at the time of the accident.

The driver involved in the crash was not arrested or ticketed and was not suspected of drunken driving, according to the officer.

The fatal crash prompted authorities to close two eastbound lanes and issue a SigAlert, but the roadway was cleared around 1 a.m., according to the CHP.
