A 28-year-old active duty Camp Pendleton Marine who was lying in the fast lane of Interstate 8 was killed Sunday morning when he was run over by a car that could not stop in time.

The victim was hit by a Toyota Camry that was being driven by a woman on the westbound Interstate 8, just east of San Diego State University at about 3:30 a.m., according to the California Highway Patrol.

As the sedan approached, the driver was unable to stop in time after seeing him and struck him. She then called 911 and when first responders arrived, his death was confirmed at the scene, according to the San Diego County Medical Examiner.

The victim’s identity was not released until his next of kin is notified.

The driver was not injured.
