A fire of unknown origin damaged an apartment in a 20- unit Serra Mesa residential complex late Thursday afternoon.

The non-injury blaze in the 9200 block of Village Glen Drive erupted shortly before 4:30 p.m., according to the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department.

Crews were able to contain the flames to one second-floor unit and rescued two unscathed puppies in the process, SDFRD spokesman Lee Swanson said. The personnel had the fire under control within 15 minutes, he said.

The American Red Cross was called in to help the woman who lives in the apartment arrange for interim lodging.

The cause of the blaze, which apparently started in the kitchen of the unit while the resident was away, was under investigation, Swanson said.
