A would-be robber fled empty-handed from a Hillcrest bank Thursday after a teller rebuffed his demand for cash.

The man, who appeared to be in his 20s or early 30s, carried out the failed holdup attempt at the Chase bank office in the 3800 block of Fifth Avenue shortly before 1:30 p.m., according to San Diego police.

When the clerk declined to hand over any money, the thwarted thief walked out of the building and ran off to the north on Fourth Avenue.

Witnesses described him as a roughly 6-foot, 5-inch black man in baggy blue jeans, an olive-green hooded sweat shirt and black tennis shoes, Officer Frank Cali said.
