A motorcyclist was seriously injured Friday in San Diego’s Midway District when he was struck by an SUV that made a U-turn against a red light.

The accident was reported at 6:34 p.m. in the 3200 block of Barnett Avenue, according to San Diego Police Department Officer Robert Heims.

The 41-year-old motorcyclist was riding west on Barnett Avenue, approaching Tuscaloosa Street and had the green light, Heims said.

A 58-year-old woman was behind the wheel of a Subaru Crosstrek facing eastbound on Barnett Avenue at the red light when she made a U-turn for unknown reasons against the red light, Heims said.

The motorcyclist broadsided her and was knocked off the motorcycle. He sustained multiple fractures to a hip and was taken to a hospital with what later proved to be serious injuries.

The driver of the Subaru also was taken to a hospital for scratches on her leg, according to Heims.

No alcohol was involved and the collision remains under investigation, Heims said.
