A man who authorities believe was under the influence of a controlled substance was arrested Thursday at San Diego State University‘s student union, causing an uproar on social media.
Campus police responded to calls of a black man, who is not a student, acting erratically on campus and jumping a construction fence, according to a statement released by
SDSU President Elliot Hirshman.
“The officers arrived at the scene and determined the person appeared to be under the influence of a controlled substance,” read the statement. “In their attempt to arrest the person, he resisted and the officers restrained him until backup could arrive.”
The man was not injured and was transported to the San Diego County Jail, according to the statement. The incident occurred at 12:42 p.m.
Hirshman said “The use of force in an arrest is a significant matter and we understand the concerns members of our community have expressed about the arrest. Consistent with department policy, this incident will be evaluated and reviewed by the field supervisor, a lieutenant, a use-of-force expert and the Chief of Police.”
The arrest caused an uproar on social media with Twitter users tweeting under the hashtag “#blackunderattacksdsu.” Tweets from students stated the police officers used excessive force when arresting the man.
One tweet said five officers tackled “him to the ground while on the ground he told the officers that they were hurting him and even said he couldn’t breath.” However, video of the arrest showed only two officers.
