A natural gas leak in a Sunset Cliffs-area neighborhood prompted authorities to evacuate 20 surrounding houses Tuesday morning while repair crews fixed the problem.

Construction workers accidentally broke a 2-inch utility pipeline about 8:15 a.m. while digging alongside Adair Street, near Santa Barbara Street, according to the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department.

It took San Diego Gas & Electric personnel about an hour to halt the non-injury leak, after which the displaced residents were able to return to their homes, said SDFRD spokesman Lee Swanson.
