One driver was killed and a second was injured in a rollover crash on Sunday night in Oceanside.

A speeding 2015 Volkswagen Passat slammed into a 2000 Ford Explorer as the VW’s driver changed lanes approaching the intersection of westbound state Route 76 and Old Grove Road around 7 p.m. Sunday, according to Oceanside Police Sgt. Rick Davis.

The force of the crash caused the Ford SUV to overturn. It came to a rest on its roof in the intersection, Davis said.

The Volkswagen careened across the intersection and crashed into a light pole. Davis said its driver, a man in his late 30s, was pronounced dead at the scene shortly afterward. His name was withheld pending family notification.

The SUV’s driver, a woman in her 20s, was taken to a hospital with minor injuries.

Davis said it remained unknown whether alcohol was a factor in the crash. Anyone with additional information was asked to call police accident investigator David Paul at (760) 435-4431.
