An alleged gang member who was shot by sheriff’s deputies while armed with knives following a brief pursuit in Vista that ended in a crash has died from his injuries, authorities said Monday.
Deputies attempted to stop 33-year-old Sergio Daniel Weick’s Lexus near the intersection of Knapp Drive and North Santa Fe Avenue Thursday afternoon, but he refused to comply and led them on a roughly 8-minute chase. Weick was named in an outstanding warrant for his arrest stemming from a SWAT standoff in February 2015, said sheriff’s Lt. Kenneth Nelson.
Weick crashed the Lexus into a rock barrier at a townhome complex on Bronze Way near North Melrose Drive, then tried to run down a path between two homes, Nelson said. But deputies were close behind, and opened fire when a fight broke out.
“At some point along the narrow walkway, the suspect and deputies became involved in a confrontation,” Nelson said. “During that confrontation, two deputies fired multiple rounds, striking the suspect several times.”
Weick was arrested and it was subsequently discovered that he was armed with knives and shotgun shells, Nelson said.
The suspect was taken to a hospital in critical condition and underwent surgery for multiple gunshot wounds, but later died. Nelson said the county Medical Examiner’s Office would determine the exact cause of his death.
