The cause of a single-vehicle crash near Lake Hodges that left a 35-year-old San Diego woman severely injured remained in under investigation Thursday.

The woman’s westbound SUV veered across Del Dios Highway, went airborne and continued down a steep embankment west of the Lake Hodges Dam around 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, California Highway Patrol Officer Chris Parent said. It overturned and came to a stop 274 feet from the roadway.

The driver was taken to Palomar Medical Center with major injuries, according to the officer.

Parent said the motorist was not suspected of driving under the influence.
