A suspect in the fatal shooting of a teenage boy 17 years ago during a party in a Mountain View-area neighborhood was turned over to U.S. authorities Thursday following his arrest in Mexico.
Alfredo Yanez-Munoz, now 37, is believed to have fled south of the border shortly after the slaying of 15-year-old Wilberto Rodriguez.
On Sept. 18, 1999, the victim got into a scuffle with Yanez-Munoz during a birthday celebration at a home in the 4300 block of Newton Avenue, according to San Diego police. The fight ended when Yanez-Munoz, who went by the nickname “Scarface,” and a cohort of his allegedly pulled handguns and shot the teen.
The second alleged assailant, George David Garcia, then 22, was arrested three weeks after the slaying and charged with murder, Lt. Manny Del Toro said. Yanez-Munoz remained a fugitive until his arrest in Mexico.
Yanez-Munoz was expected to be booked into San Diego Central Jail on suspicion of murder.
