An apparently suicidal woman armed with a gun held police and SWAT officers at bay in a downtown San Diego hotel for about 3 1/2 hours before being detained Monday morning.
The woman was believed to have holed up with a man, possibly her boyfriend, in a room at the Plaza Hotel on Fourth Avenue near Broadway shortly after 5:30 a.m., according to San Diego Police. Streets were shut down in the immediate area and neighboring rooms were evacuated as police crisis negotiators and a SWAT team were summoned to the scene.
Police were eventually able to contact the woman via phone, at which point the man was able to wrestle the gun away, San Diego Police Lt. Scott Wahl told reporters. Both the man and woman were detained, but it was not immediately clear if either was arrested.
The police activity downtown also caused a service disruption to orange and blue line trolleys, according to the Metropolitan Transit System. Riders were advised to instead use shuttles running between America Plaza and the Civic Center.
