Two people were killed Saturday when a pickup truck went off Interstate 15 north of Escondido and plummeted down about 300 feet.

The crash was reported about 8:30 p.m. on the northbound Escondido Freeway near Old Highway 395, according to the California Highway Patrol.

Witnesses reported a sedan made a lane change and caused the truck to go off the road, according to the CHP.

The driver and a passenger were killed, according to the Union-Tribune.

A tow truck with a 300-foot cable was ordered to recover the vehicle and firefighters had to rappel to get to the truck.
