A single traffic fatality occurred in the San Diego area over the long Independence Day holiday weekend, authorities reported Tuesday.

Between 6 p.m. Friday and 11:59 p.m. Monday, California Highway Patrol officers made 79 local DUI arrests, according to the state agency.

Statewide, 35 people died in road crashes during the 78-hour period, and the CHP took 1,118 motorists into custody on suspicion of driving while inebriated.
