Authorities released the name Tuesday of a 30-year-old Midwestern man found stabbed to death last weekend on a Mission Valley sidewalk.

Patrol officers responding to a 911 call found the body of Michael Nichols of Gary, Indiana, in the 1300 block of Hotel Circle South at about 9:30 a.m. Sunday, according to San Diego police.

An autopsy determined that Nichols died from a single stab wound to his upper torso, said Lt. Ray Valentin.

Investigators have identified no suspects in the slaying, and the motive remains unknown. The victim did not appear to have been robbed, the lieutenant said.

Detectives are reviewing grainy videotape from a surveillance camera at a hotel near where Nichols’ body was found in hopes of finding images of the assailant, according to Valentin.

It was unclear if the victim was simply visiting San Diego or if he might have been planning to relocate to the city, Valentin said.
