A passenger train struck and killed an unidentified pedestrian Thursday on a stretch of tracks near Batiquitos Lagoon.

The southbound Amtrak train was traveling at about 85 mph when the engineer spotted the person at about 11 a.m. on the tracks near the intersection of Avenida Encinas and Ponto Drive in Carlsbad, according to sheriff’s officials.

The driver sounded a warning horn and activated the brakes but was unable to stop the locomotive before it hit the pedestrian, Deputy Amber Reeves said.

The victim died at the scene.

The county Medical Examiner’s Office was called in to take custody of the body for identification purposes and to try to determine if the death was an accident or a suicide.

The fatality delayed rail service in the area into the mid-afternoon.
