There were no traffic fatalities during the Memorial Day weekend in the San Diego area, making it two years in a row without a local road death during the summer season-opening holiday, the California Highway Patrol reported Tuesday.

On the DUI enforcement front, CHP officers jailed 57 motorists for allegedly driving while intoxicated on area roads from 6 p.m. Friday to 11:59 p.m. Monday. Over the comparable period last year, the agency made 79 arrests of drivers suspected of being inebriated.

Statewide, 39 people died in vehicle crashes during the 78-hour time span this year, eight more than on the Memorial Day weekend in 2015, and the CHP made 1,065 DUI arrests, 60 fewer than last year.
