A tanker truck carrying several thousand gallons of diesel fuel crashed and ended up on its side on an Interstate 8 off-ramp in Mission Valley Friday, injuring the driver and spilling at least part of its load into a river, authorities said.
The crash, reported just before 6 p.m. on the Morena Boulevard off-ramp from westbound Interstate 8, prompted a hazardous materials response, according to the California Highway Patrol and a report from the scene.
The driver got out of the truck on his own, but suffered a head wound, according to a CHP log.
An unknown amount fuel made its way into the San Diego River, the CHP reported.
Crews called for Caltrans to bring dirt to the scene to contain the spilled fuel.
The crash and spill shut down the Morena Boulevard off-ramps from both sides of the freeway, according to the CHP.
