A fire of unknown origin burned through about an acre’s worth of dense vegetation in Tecolote Canyon Monday, sending a thick column of smoke over the area but causing no structural damage or injuries.

The blaze erupted shortly after 5 p.m. off Genesee Avenue, near Osler Street in Linda Vista, according to the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department.

Ground crews and personnel aboard a water-dropping helicopter had the flames under control within about a half-hour, SDFRD spokesman Lee Swanson said. Police closed nearby traffic lanes to give emergency vehicles unfettered access to the fire site.

The cause of the blaze was under investigation.
