A convicted child killer attacked two corrections officers at Richard J. Donovan Correctional Facility Monday, sending them to a hospital with minor injuries.

William Orren Dawes, 36, allegedly ran up behind a correctional captain at the Otay Mesa prison and struck him on the back of the head with a large piece of concrete shortly before 9:30 a.m., corrections Lt. Philip Bracamonte said.

When a second guard intervened, Dawes struck him in the face with the makeshift weapon, Bracamonte said.

The second victim was able to defend himself and force Dawes to the ground as the inmate continued to resist and fight. Additional officers then arrived and helped subdue and restrain Dawes.

The two bludgeoned staffers were treated at an outside trauma center for head and facial injuries and released later in the day. A third officer received treatment at the prison for minor injuries. All three were expected to fully recover.

Dawes suffered superficial injuries in the fracas. After prison medics tended to him, he was transferred into a segregation unit away from the general inmate population pending completion of an investigation into the incident.

In December 2008, Dawes was sent to state prison to serve a life sentence for stabbing his 11-year-old niece to death as she slept in their Laguna Niguel home. He claimed a “voice from heaven” had commanded him to commit the murder.
